RES Exam Registration, Eligibility & Fees: What to Know

Beyond studying the content, there are a few practical steps to actually sit the RES exam. Here is the general path. Because eligibility rules, fees and dates are set by the authorities and updated from time to time, always confirm the current details on the official CEA and exam administrator websites before you commit.

Who can take the RES exam?

General eligibility for becoming a registered salesperson typically includes:

  • Being at least 21 years old.
  • A minimum educational qualification (e.g. at least 4 GCE "O" Level passes or equivalent).
  • Completing the required RES course with an approved course provider before you are eligible to sit the exam.

The RES course is a prerequisite — you generally cannot register for the exam without having completed it within the validity period.

How registration works

The RES exam is held on scheduled dates through the year, administered by the appointed examination body. In broad strokes:

  • Complete your RES course with an approved provider.
  • Register for an exam sitting during an open registration window.
  • Sit Paper 1 and Paper 2 (you may be able to take them together or separately, subject to the rules).
  • Pass both papers (60% each) within the allowed validity period.

What to budget for

Your main costs are the RES course fee (varies by provider) and the exam fee per paper. These change over time, so check the current published figures rather than relying on a number you saw online. Budget for the possibility of re-sitting a paper, too.

After you pass

Passing the RES exam is the qualifying step — you then apply to be registered as a salesperson through a licensed estate agency, which submits your registration to CEA. Your agency and CEA handle the registration and annual renewal process from there.
